11 Questions with Bunni: Getting to know your boudoir photographer
I have been accepting submissions from all of you, to hear what you most want to learn about me with the plan of posting the questions and answers here in our blog. With the year ending, I thought what better time than now!
Q: “I know Bunni isn’t your real name, but how did you get it?”
Bunni: “I have a lot of allergies so wiggle my itchy nose like a bunny. The name stuck and here we are almost 20 years later.”
Q: “How did you get into photography?”
Bunni: “Like many people, a high school photography class allowed me to more seriously dip my toe into photography. I always liked snapping photos, usually of nature as a child however being in a structured environment really forced me to try new things and experiment which only made my love for photography grow. It was a college course that inspired me to use photography to bring confidence to people.
Q: “So, self-confidence must be very important to you?
Bunni: “Extremely! I believe in the power of confidence. It helps you be a more successful, happy personal in all aspects of life. So much good comes from self-confidence. I think society, pop culture, and the media add fuel to a fire of self-doubt that lives within us all. Causing this fire to grow, out of control and rule our lives. My hope is that my photos can bring some of that confidence back to people and allow them to ‘steer their ship’ so to speak. Happiness is the goal after all, right?
Q: “Definitely! So, what else inspires you?”
Bunni: “I find inspiration everywhere. I find a lot of inspiration from old hollywood icons like Rita Hayworth, Hedy Lamar, Ava Gardner and Grace Kelly. I love burlesque so you’ll see hints of that in my work as well as all things Hollywood Regency. My favorite artist Mark Ryden, who mixes cute kitch with macabre and I watch a lot of movies, listen to all types of music and indulge in fashion at every chance. Right now, I source a lot of inspo from my favorite band’s lead singer Maria Brink of “In This Moment”.
Q: “Are there any photographers that inspire or influence your work?”
Bunni: “There are definitely photographers who’s work I find inspirational. Lindsay Adler, for her artistic flair, Irene Rudynk for her romantic ethereal aesthetic, Kelly Robitaille for her fantasy and sometimes dark portraits and of course, Annie Leibovitz! I think that my style has a touch of all of them in it.
Q: “How would you describe your style?”
Bunni: “Glam, vintage, goth, modern, classic. Burberry meets Chanel with lots of McQueen. I was recently described as a “classically put together goth".
Q: “So you’re into fashion then?”
Bunni: “Definitely. I’ve always loved fashion and used to sign up for every magazine subscription I could when they had those little postcards you could send in. My mom received a steady flow of bills for my dozen plus subscriptions and never yelled at me. She was a saint about the whole thing really.
Q: “Wow your mom sounds really supportive! Would you ever want to be a designer or a stylist?”
Bunni: “I think being a costume designer would be so cool! Especially for a sci-fi or fantasy movie. You get to create some really fanciful, otherworldly pieces.”
Q: “Since you make a lot of the items in your Glam Closet, what’s your favorite item?”
Bunni: “Right now it has to be a toss-up, between the lace, Swarovski and ostrich feather wings I’m working on, or my Marie headdress inspired by Sophia Coppola’s “Marie Antionette”
Q: “Do you have a dream place you’d like to shoot"?”
Bunni: “It’s every little fashion loving girl’s dream to shoot at Versailles isn’t it? I really love the juxtaposition of glamour against raw nature though, so places far off the beaten path make me really excited like Death Valley, the Australian outback, Bali and Norweigan Aspen Forests or an abandoned castle in Europe.
Q: “So what’s next from Bunni Devereaux Photography?”
Bunni: “Only time will tell! I’m hoping 2020 brings lots of new opportunities to use my talents as a photographer to make people feel more confident and own their own brand of beautiful!”
